A mobile application (or mobile
app) is a software application designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers
and other mobile devices. They are usually available through application
distribution platforms, which are typically operated by the owner of the mobile
operating system, such as the Apple App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone
Store, and BlackBerry App World.
By the end of the 2013 downloads
of applications through smartphones will reach 56 billion, 89% will correspond
to Android, 34% iOS, 4% Windows Phone and 3% Blackberry iOS. Referring to tablets, it is forecast 14
billion downloads, which 75% will be from iPad, 21% from Android, 2% from
Amazon Kindle and 2% from Windows device.
Based on these estimates, in the
period 2012-2017 the number of users that use mobile applications will grow at
an annual rate of the 29.8%.
According to an analysis by TCS, leading companies have on average 25% of mobile
applications designed exclusively for tablets.
In the region of Latin America,
during the 2012, 28% of the companies had mobile applications available for
smart phones and tablets. Taking into account the growth that is taking the
mobile applications market, it will grow more than 20% for 2015, with more than
one third (34%) of all the applications developed to be used in both devices.
Android and iOS will continue
heading as operating systems of reference while Windows and BlackBerry will
fight to have a space in the competition.
